David Breeden

Dr. David Breeden is a poet, Unitarian Universalist Humanist minister, Humanist celebrant, and religious naturalist based in Minneapolis, MN. He is the author of several books of poetry and philosophy. His work explores the intersections of creativity, ecological belonging, and justice work as resources for contemporary freethought communities. David holds an MFA from The Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, a Ph.D. from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master of Divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, with additional study in poetry and Buddhism at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.

David is a member of the freedom of expression group PEN International and a member of the Institute for American Religious and Philosophical Thought. 

he serves on the board of HumanistMN, his local AHA chapter, and teaches in the Humanism Concentration at United Theological School in the Twin Cities. He is former chair of the Education Committee of the American Humanist Association, which honored him with the 2023 Distinguished Service Award.
