Senator Elizabeth Warren on LGBTQ Rights

In discussing the Masterpiece Cake Shop court case, which dealt with whether businesses can refuse certain services based on the First Amendment claims of free speech and free exercise of religion, Warren argued the refusals were discrimination and not constitutionally protected, tweeting on June 17, 2019:

“It was never about a cake—it’s about making sure no one has a license to discriminate against LGBTQ+ Americans. The lower court needs to make the right decision, and until then, we’ll keep fighting for equal rights.”

On June 20, 2019, Warren re-introduced her Refund Equality Bill, which would grant same-sex couples tax refunds for the years they were unable to claim marriage benefits before gay marriage was legalized. In a tweet she said:

“For years, legally married same-sex couples couldn’t file joint taxes & often paid more. I’m reintroducing my Refund Equality Act with 39 other senators to right that wrong.”
