Our mission is to increase the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in Maryland and strengthen the secular character of our government as the best guarantee of freedom for all.
About the Secular Coalition for Maryland
The Secular Coalition for Maryland is a State Chapter of the Secular Coalition for America, a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization whose purpose is to amplify the diverse and growing voice of the nontheistic community in the United States. The Secular Coalition for Maryland work with the national staff of the Secular Coalition for America in Washington DC to lobby the U.S. Congress on issues of special concern our supporting organizations in Maryland as well as our broader constituency.
The leadership of the Secular Coalition of Maryland works with supporting groups in Maryland and our national staff to identify and prioritize issues of concern and to plan strategy.
The Secular Coalition for Maryland works with supporting organizations in Maryland to lobby at the national, state, and local level.
The Secular Coalition for Maryland also expresses the secular viewpoint about legal issues and court cases in Maryland and we will file or join amicus briefs where appropriate.
The member organizations of the Secular Coalition for America are established 501(c)(3) nonprofits that serve atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and other nontheistic Americans. Their purpose in founding the coalition was to formalize a cooperative structure for visible, unified activism to improve the civic situation of citizens with a naturalistic worldview. A number of additional have endorsed our mission statement.
While the Secular Coalition for Maryland was created expressly by and for nontheistic Americans, we also enthusiastically welcome the participation of religious individuals who share our view that freedom of conscience must extend to people of all faiths and of none. Thus, we work in cooperation with a variety of other organizations and coalitions where common ground exists on specific issues.

Mathew Goldstein, Chairperson
After getting an undergraduate degree in Political Science, by which time he realized he was an atheist, and working for some years in various places in New York, he took the federal civil service exam and was hired in 1991 to work as an Information Technology Specialist in D.C. While living in Virginia he acquired a graduate degree in Operations Research at George Mason University.
Wayne Libby, Communications
A new addition to secular activism, Wayne joined The Secular Coalition for Maryland after attending the 2016 Reason Rally. He is retired United States Air Force with over 20 years of military service, over half of that holding the position of Special Agent with the Office of Special Investigations. During his career, his responsibilities led him to travel all across the United States, Europe, and locations in the Middle East such as Damascus, Syria and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. While experiencing other cultures around the world, the importance of a secular government became more apparent to him. He now identifies as an atheist, humanist, and skeptic. Earning his B.S. degree in Computer Science from University of Maryland, he uses his expertise as the Technical Security Program Manager for the Department of Energy. Wayne currently resides in Southern Maryland.
