Hawkins is an activist and Marine Corps veteran. In 1984 he helped found the Green party in the U.S. From 2001-2017 he worked as a teamster for UPS. He has also been a Green party candidate for many positions in Syracuse, including city council member, mayor and auditor. In 2010 and 2014, he also unsuccessfully ran for governor of New York.
