American Atheists, Inc., is a national civil rights organization that works to achieve religious equality for all Americans by protecting what Thomas Jefferson called the “wall of separation” between government and religion created by the First Amendment. We strive to create an environment where atheism and atheists are accepted as members of our nation’s communities and where casual bigotry against our community is seen as abhorrent and unacceptable. We promote understanding of atheists through education, outreach, and community-building and work to end the stigma associated with being an atheist in America.
Their advocacy work includes (1) Constitutional & non-discrimination protections to ensure that everyone is both entitled to their beliefs and that no beliefs are favored by the government; (2) Protecting young people from religious indoctrination, religion-based harms, and attacks on secular education; (3) Protecting all Americans from religious exemptions and privileges that undermine access to healthcare, including access to abortion services, contraception, vaccinations, and medical aid-in-dying; and, (4) Ending special privileges for religion and religious belief in all areas of law, including the tax code, so-called “blasphemy” laws, state- and federal-level RFRAs, and exemptions to generally applicable laws like civil rights protections.
