Government Affairs Resources for Secular Voters

The Pew Research Center’s 2019 report on religion in the United States shows the increase in secular Americans and the changing religious landscape.

The American Religious Landscape in 2020 from the Public Religion Research Institute includes atheists and agnostics in its Unaffiliated category and concludes that the Unaffiliateds constitute 23 percent of adult Americans. PPRI “conducts independent research at the intersection of religion, culture, and public policy.” They produce many other studies.

Congress.gov is the official website for information on legislation, Congressional Committees, and members of Congress. There is also a link to thousands of reports from the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress on issues that come before Congress. Govtrack is a similar source of information on legislation and makes it easy for you to track bills you want to follow.

The Senate and the House of Representatives each have their own websites.

Ballotpedia features comprehensive information on federal and state government, elections and policy issues.

Votesmart offers in-depth information on members of Congress, state officials, and elections.

A summary of How our Laws are Made from USA.gov, your online guide to the federal government.

Opensecrets.org provides a comprehensive resource for federal campaign contributions, lobbying data, and analysis. The site is a good way to find information on federal campaign contributions and the voices that some elected officials may be paying attention to the most.

Polling information and analysis are available at the Cook Political Report, an independent nonpartisan publication founded by political analyst Charlie Cook, and on FiveThirtyEight.

The Hill and Politico provide information about what’s occurring in Congress and the federal agencies. You can sign up for daily updates.

Facts matter. Efforts such as the Annenberg Public Policy Center’s Factcheck.org and the Poynter Institute’s Politifact keep track of politicians’ statements and provide some context.

You can look up many sources of information on the separation of church and state. Here is one from Americans United.
