Senator Bernie Sanders is a candidate in the 2020 presidential election. He declared his candidacy on February 19, 2019.

Sanders was elected as mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1980. In 1990, Sanders was elected as an independent candidate to the House of Representatives. He was later elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. In the Senate, he is a member of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, the Committee on Veterans Affairs and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. He is a ranking member on the Committee on Budget and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions’ Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging. He was previously also chair of the Committee on Veterans Affairs.
