But even as the President projected confidence, he also made it clear that he’s desperate to shore up the Evangelical vote, telling CBN that while their prayers were nice, he needed Christians to go out and vote. As part of his elevator speech, Trump claimed that his administration had done more for Christians than any other administration.
“Well they’re going to show up for me because nobody’s done more for Christians or evangelicals or frankly religion than I have,” he claimed. “You’ve seen all the things that we’ve passed including the Johnson Amendment and so many things we’ve nullified. Nobody’s done more than we have,” Trump said.
The Johnson amendment prohibits non-profit religious organizations from political involvement. Trump has previously claimed he’d eliminated the provision. But according to Politifact, that’s not entirely accurate. Religious leaders spoke up politically before Trump, without facing repercussions, and he does not have the authority to get rid of the law.
