The Alabama state Senate on Tuesday voted to approve a bill that would allow the Ten Commandments to be displayed on public property.
The proposed constitutional amendment — which the Senate approved by a 23-3 margin — will now go to the state’s House of Representatives, the Associated Press reported.
The bill would have to be approved by voters to go into effect. If approved, it would mean that schools and government buildings could display the Ten Commandments.
Under the bill, the Ten Commandments would have to “be displayed in a manner that complies with constitutional requirements, including, but not limited to, being intermingled with historical or educational items, or both, in a larger display.”
