Secular Coalition for America’s Stance on Political Violence

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Secular Coalition for America unequivocally condemns all forms of political violence. A healthy democracy depends on vigorous debate, peaceful protest, and fair elections—not intimidation, threats, or bloodshed. Violence in the political sphere silences voices and weakens the very framework of our representative government.

As a secular organization, we are guided by the principle that this life is the only one we know we have. That makes it all the more precious, and it obligates us to create a society where every person can live freely and with dignity. Political violence denies that promise. It strips away opportunities for individuals and communities to flourish, and it undermines the democratic process through which we resolve our deepest disagreements.

We call on leaders of every party, and citizens across the nation, to stand firm against political violence in all its forms. Silence in the face of violence or threats only emboldens those who would destabilize our democracy. Instead, we must work together to foster a culture of civic respect, where our differences are discussed through reason and persuasion instead of force.

Democracy requires our courage and advocacy. In this one life we share, we must choose a path that strengthens freedom, equality, and justice for all. The Secular Coalition for America is committed to that path, and to building a future where all Americans can live without fear and with the full promise of liberty.
