President Donald Trump on Religious Liberty

Trump’s administration has repeatedly dedicated time and energy to the concept of ‘religious liberty’ in the U.S. That being said, this commitment has been directed toward privileging Christian individuals who feel their religious liberty may be challenged by having to interact with those they disagree with. Specific initiatives range from the development of a Religious Liberty Task Force through the Department of Justice announced July 30, 2018, and releasing a guideline for federal prosecutions on October 6, 2017 mandating that “except in the narrowest circumstances” the Justice Department will side with those claiming religious liberty, even if that ruling allows for discrimination.

Another example of the administration “protecting religious liberty” occurred in January 2019, when the Department of Health and Human Services granted an exemption allowing a religious foster care agency in South Carolina to discriminate against potential foster care parents who were not the ‘correct’ version of Protestant Christian.
