Letter: Citizens invited to take part in secular week of action

The week of April 26 has been declared a week of action by the nation’s leading secular groups, including the Secular Coalition for America, Foundation Beyond Belief, Secular Student Alliance, Center for Inquiry, and American Atheists.

It is designed to coincide with the federal government’s overt — and legally problematic — endorsement of religion by its designation of the first Thursday of each May as a National Day of Prayer.

We secularists want to show the nation that putting values into action has a much greater impact on the well-being of society than does the mere offering of ineffectual prayer. We also want to publicly affirm our commitment to a government, at all levels, that functions without excessive religious intrusion, as our Founding Fathers intended.
