If it’s good enough for America’s money and motto, it should be good enough to be displayed in Louisiana’s public classrooms, a lawmaker says of “In God We Trust.”
Sen. Regina Barrow, D-Baton Rouge, believes the country’s official motto should be taught and displayed in schools.
Her Senate Bill 224 sailed through a committee here Monday after Barrow removed language from the bill to assure the legislation wouldn’t cost the state or school systems money by requiring expensive signage.
“This is part of our country’s history,” Regina said. “Our nation was build on a Christian foundation.
“We need to make sure the children know that and pass it on to the next generation.”
The 84th Congress passed a joint resolution declaring “In God We Trust” the national motto of the United States” in 1956 without debate. It was signed by President Eisenhower.
There was also no debate over Barrow’s bill in the Senate Finance Committee Monday.
Barrow removed any concern about cost by not requiring any specific displays that might generate expense. “It could be just a paper sign,” she said.
She dismissed any potential concerns about separation of church and state.
