Florida bill would require schools to display ‘In God We Trust’

A bill moving through Florida legislature would require every school and administrative building in the state to display “In God We Trust.”

Democratic Rep. Kimberly Daniels said the initiative would help children learn about the motto, which is printed on U.S. paper currency and the state flag. It became Florida’s official motto in 2006.

The bill received unanimous approval last week from Democrats and Republicans.

“As someone whose grandmother came to America in order to be Jewish, after nine of her brothers and sisters and both of her parents were killed in Russia, that’s why she came here,” he said. “Not to be protected from religion, it was to be protected from a state that wouldn’t let her practice her religion.”
