On Monday, Mar. 24, President Trump announced, “America will again and soon be open for business — very soon,” before sharing that he wanted to ease COVID-19-related public health and safety restrictions by Easter (Apr. 12). “It’s such an important day for other reasons, but I’ll make it an important day for this, too,” he added. “I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter.” That intended change in government policy isn’t just a naked attempt to appease the religious right, it goes directly against the guidance of public health officials and puts countless American lives at risk. “[Dr. Anthony] Fauci, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, and other leading public health experts have told administration officials that prematurely scaling back social distancing could not only hamper mitigation efforts, but also overwhelm hospitals,” reported the Washington Post in their coverage of the President’s announcement. Lawmakers can and should urge the President to reconsider before it is too late. Tell your Members of Congress to speak out and reinforce that U.S. Government policy on COVID-19 should be guided by science, research, and public health experts.
