Privileging Religion

The Constitution prohibits our government from advancing any particular religious belief or religion in general, and from inhibiting individual religious beliefs. The Secular Coalition for America opposes government actions that privilege religion in over non-religion in public policy or society.

Commission to Study Religious Financial Structures Excludes All But Evangelical Christians

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A commission formed at the request of U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to “spearhead an independent national effort to review and provide input on major accountability and policy issues affecting [religious] organizations” today announced that all of its 15 members are evangelical Christians, provoking criticism from church-state watch groups who cited the lack of independent and non-evangelical representatives as evidence of the commission’s bias.

'In God We Trust' Resolution Protested by Secular Coalition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House Judiciary Committee today approved House Concurrent Resolution 13, which would unnecessarily reaffirm the divisive term “In God We Trust” as the nation’s official motto and encourage its public display in all public buildings, public schools, and government institutions.
