Official Prayers

The Supreme Court has ruled that official prayers before legislative bodies must be nonsectarian and are prohibited in public schools. The Secular Coalition for America opposes official prayers, which constitute an endorsement of religion by government.

Two bills are currently making their way through the House of Representatives that aim to protect the National Day of Prayer--as if it needed protection--one of which has over 80 co-sponsors, about one-fifth of the entire House.

House 'Prayer Day' Resolutions Divide America, Violate Constitution

One-fifth of U.S. House Members are co-sponsoring at least one of two resolutions that falsely assert the constitutionality of the National Day of Prayer, an event that the Secular Coalition for America today decried as divisive and in violation of America's founding principles. The lobbying group representing the interests of atheists, agnostics, and all other secular Americans called upon Members of Congress to reject the resolutions and upon President Obama to end government-sanctioned religious events.   Read more »

Secular Coalition for America Calls Upon Pentagon to Cancel 'Christian-Themed' Event

The Pentagon should respect the constitutional separation of church and state and cancel a planned National Day of Prayer event, particularly in light of its recent labeling as a "Christian-themed event" by an Army spokesman, the Secular Coalition for America said today. The Pentagon should also sever all operational ties to the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a radical right wing organization headed by the wife of Focus on the Family's James Dobson, and housed in Focus on the Family's headquarters.   Read more »
