Oregon Governor Signs Bill Giving Equal Rights to Secular Celebrants

Salem, Oregon– The Secular Coalition for Oregon applauded Governor Kate Brown today for signing HB 2113 into law, which allows for secular celebrants to legally solemnize marriages. The bill was introduced in response to lobbying efforts by the Secular Coalition for Oregon.

Statement by Brian Harvey, Chair of the Secular Coalition for Oregon

“Today marks a victory for equality and for the more than one-in-three Oregonians who have no religion. By signing HB 2113 into law, Governor Brown has given nonreligious couples the right to celebrate a wedding which respects and reflects their secular values. People of all faiths and none should have a right to commemorate this occasion in a manner consistent with their beliefs. By empowering secular celebrants to solemnize marriages, lawmakers have sent a powerful message that Oregon is a state which values inclusion and celebrates religious diversity. Thank you to Governor Brown, Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, Representative Mitch Greenlick, and all the members of the legislature who supported the passage of this bill.”
