The Secular Coalition for North Carolina

Whereas, the United States of America was founded on Enlightenment Principles of Reason; andWhereas, the Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the United States of America; andWhereas, the Constitution of the United States bases its authority on the people alone, as stated in the preamble: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”Whereas, this founding document of the United States was unique in the world in that it did not establish religion, which was subsequently reinforced by the First Amendment; andWhereas, the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment makes the First Amendment applicable to the states; andWhereas, North Carolina is one of the 50 states in the United States of America; andWhereas, North Carolina legislators seem intent on undermining the authority of the U.S. Constitution by continuing to propose bills and resolutions to promote and establish their religion, and by continuing to sanction sectarian prayers at government functions in defiance of the law; andWhereas, our State has great challenges before us; we are in desperate need of Reason and Reasoned Action; Now, therefore,Be it resolved by the Secular Coalition for North Carolina, on behalf of all secular citizens:SECTION 1. The Secular Coalition for North Carolina honors the memory of our Founding Fathers who gave us a secular government, attempting to separate church from state to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has for centuries soaked the soil of much of the earth in blood.SECTION 2. The Secular Coalition for North Carolina proclaims a North Carolina Week of Reason in conjunction with the National Day of Reason on May 2 this year, and encourages our citizens to turn to Reason and Reasoned Action on behalf of our State.SECTION 3. The Secular Coalition for North Carolina asks the legislators of North Carolina to obey the law in place of flouting it or working to undermine it, to cease behaving as representatives of a religious sect, and to instead be representatives of all their constituents.SECTION 4. This resolution is effective immediately.
Despite the fact that there are tens of millions of nontheistic Americans, we remain one of the most marginalized groups in the country. The Secular Coalition for North Carolina is working to make sure that we are heard in the State Capitol. We fight in Raleigh against religious privileging on the state level, just as other chapters of the SCA fight in other states’ capitols, and the SCA fights at the federal level on Capitol Hill. We need your help to see real change in Raleigh and across North Carolina.

The Secular Coalition for America is forming state chapters across the country. Our chapters will bring together secular Americans in each state to influence government officials, legislation, and regulations. A Secular Coalition for America state chapter is unlike any other nontheistic state organization—it brings together interested organizations and individuals for the exclusive purpose of lobbying government officials.
