  • Explanation of conference call style and recording
    • No one is required to speak up, but there will be opportunities to do so.
  • Thank you for joining us for the Secular Coalition for North Carolina monthly conference call!
  • The Secular Coalition for America is the only 501(c)(4) lobbying organization representing secular and nontheistic Americans.
  • Based in Washington DC, we are working to make sure that you are heard on Capitol Hill, on the federal level, yet some of the most egregious violations of separation of church and state are being promoted and passed at a state level.
  • The Secular Coalition for America is forming state chapters across the country to bring together secular and nontheistic Americans in each state to lobby on secular issues.
State Government Update - November Elections
  • U.S. House
    • 13 seats in the U.S. House are up for election
    • The Democratic Party holds 4 seats and the Republican Party holds 9 seats
  • Governor
    • Pat McCrory (R) won election
  • State Senate
    • All 50 seats up for election
    • Republican party gained 1 seat for a 32-18 majority 
  • State Assembly
    • All 120 seats up for election
    • Republican party gained 10 seats for a 77-43 majority

  • NC Legislative Plan (Joe D)
    • Finding sponsors for 3 pieces of legislation:
      • 1. Darwin Day Recognition
      • 2. National Day of Reason
      • 3. Adding "no religion" to non-discrimination statutes
    • "Week in Review" email monitoring legislation
    • Statute review report - identifying language in the current NC statutues that does not represent our values
    • NC legislative process presentation
  • Lobbying initial steps:
    • Build a coalition
    • Grow supporter base
    • Functioning resources
    • Develop relationships with lawmakers
    • Fundraising
  • When legislative issue arises:
    • Coordinate with coalition
    • Mobilize supporters
    • Use resources to get the word out and educate
    • Meet with legislators (or better yet, they turn to us!)
