Top 5 Most Outrageous Statements from Perry’s Prayer Rally

In case you didn’t have the time (or the willpower) to follow Texas Governor Rick Perry’s grandstanding prayer rally this Saturday, here is my list of the top five most divisive and/or outrageous statements made during the televised prayer-fest.

5. Public Schools Should Bring Back Prayer and the Ten Commandments

“Lord, I pray that we might see a reinstating of the display of the Ten Commandments in our classrooms. I pray Lord that we will again see freedom to pray in our classrooms.”

Vonette Bright, a co-founder of CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) whose work has helped establish the National Day of Prayer, received huge applause when she said this. The rally’s attendees apparently believe it’s crucial for all schoolchildren – regardless of their religious backgrounds or lack thereof – to be reminded daily to respect the Sabbath, to worship only the god of Abraham, and to not covet their neighbor’s “male or female slave, or ox, or donkey.” Clearly. Since any individual student (or teacher) is free to pray to themselves during school, Bright's comment about "freedom to pray in our classrooms" must actually mean "freedom to force everyone to say a Christian prayer together."

4. Jews Should Convert to Christianity

“Tens, even hundreds, of thousands of Jewish people in the last decades have come to their Messiah. And so Lord, we pray for the revival around the world, and for Israel to come to their own Messiah.”

This “gem” came from Pastor Don Finto of the Caleb Company. According to Right Wing Watch, the sentiment that Jews should embrace Jesus was not isolated on Saturday. In fact, another rally sponsor, the International House of Prayer “actively encourages Jews to convert to Christianity.” Remember when the rally organizers said that people of all faiths were welcome at this event? Well, they were welcome—but apparently so the attendees and organizers could persuade them to convert to their religion instead.

3. Humanists Can’t Be Good Without God

“In the humanistic culture, people are talking about love without reference to Jesus Christ.”

Mike Bickle, director of the International House of Prayer Missions Base of Kansas City, was outraged – outraged! – that so many people can feel, share, and even talk about love without placing it in the context of his religion. Maybe he should take a minute to check out the American Humanist Association’s website and learn what humanism really is. It might do Bickle some good, especially considering his next quote. It’s a hum-dinger.

2. Jesus Was Anti-Gay Marriage and Anti-Choice

“There’s a crisis of truth in the pulpits today in our land. That, in the name of tolerance, even in the name of love, we are redefining love that is not on God’s terms. Jesus is god. There is no other god than Jesus. Father, son, and Holy Spirit. All the world religions, they can say what they say. There is no other god besides Jesus. There is no other standard of truth. Jesus alone is the standard of truth. He defines morality. He defines marriage. He defines life. He defines righteousness. And in our allegiance to him, we say what he says. It’s time to come out in the open. It’s time to go public. Regardless what it costs us, we love you Jesus! The only god!”

That’s Mike Bickle again. Where to begin? Well, I’m no Bible scholar, but I’m pretty sure Jesus never said anything about gay marriage or abortion, so, as Sarah Posner of Religion Dispatches observed, it sure is convenient that Bickle claims Jesus defined these things exactly “the way that Bickle does.” Notice the certainty with which he says Christianity is the only “standard of truth,” but every other religion in the world is wrong. The rest speaks for itself.

1. God Is Not Political (Says the Would-Be Presidential Candidate Hosting the Prayer Rally)

“His agenda is not a political agenda. His agenda is a salvation agenda … He is a wise, wise god, and he is wise enough to not be affiliated with any political party. Or for that matter, He is wise enough to not be affiliated with any man-made institutions.”

Yep, this one is from Governor Perry himself – and he’s exactly right! “God” has no reason to be affiliated with man-made institutions like government, public school, marriage, the doctor’s office, or prayer rallies. Wait a minute … then why did a sitting U.S. governor host a prayer rally so people could ask God to intervene in all these man-made institutions?!

Oh, that’s right. Because – as various news sources report today – Perry plans to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in the next week or two. I wonder if he’ll stick to that line about his God not having a political agenda come debate time.

UPDATE: Sources now report Perry will announce his campaign intentions Saturday.

I think you hit a blusleye there fellas!
Which is why the Apollo 8 astronauts read from the Book of Genesis and the 9/11 terrorists quoted the Koran. Is there a reason liberals cannot figure out the difference here? It looks to me like the liberal mind has left the room! LOL
Sounds like everything is going according to your stated plan. It is kind of a bummer when you find out you are not as entitled as you thought you were! But, hey, you don't really need to be taking money from religious people do you? Trust in yourself dude, lean on the power of your own awesome strength and be your own mighty source of provision. As I recall, the Humanist manifesto tells us there is no God to save us so we must save ourselves, does it not? Sounds to me like it is time you quit whining and get to work putting the manifesto into practice, if you really believe as you so boldly claim.
It is quite possible that Rick Perry will be the next President. What I find terribly delicious about this is how it will give pwned libs the vapors. This will be fun to watch. BTW, Point number 4 in this is a total misrepresentation and a left wing "tin foil yarmulke" conspiracy theory. I base this on viewing the clip for myself. Don Finto prayed for Jews to embrace their messiah. He is free to do that. There was nothing wrong with that and to declare this as some kind of coercion is yet further evidence of the creeping insanity now threatening the liberal movement. Evangelizing any people group is not only legitimate, it is reasonable, rational, and just. It is an exercise of freedom of religion and an exercise of free speech. This activity is only considered wrong in Islamist hell holes and communist despotism. (This does presume one can tell the difference between knuckle headed liberal opinions and nut job communist doctrine.)
This entire event was nothing more than the smug arrogance of the religious reich openly stating their intention to turn the USA into a totalitarian theocracy. It's another front on the war of rational freedom against the forces of religious extremism. There the muslims on one side and the christians on the other. Before we can stop Islamic fundamentalism, the USA will fall from within. In less than 50 years, the USA will be broken into several smaller, mutually-antagonistic countries.
So, a bus full of dead people and a brain damaged child as the result of a drunk driving is the miracle? I'm sorry, but this does not make sense to me, please explain.
Anonymous, I think you've been Poe'd.
Ask the children dying a slow death of starvation in various parts of the world about this love you speak of. In addition, how about asking the the child you describe how wonderful it is that he is alive wearing a helmet and a drool cup. You need to take a a lot of critical thinking classes...
We live here, and, the last time it came up that a Governor from Texas was running, I was quipping to my out of state contacts; "Take my Governor, PLEASE!" I won't be making that same mistake again. We've come up with a clever Music Video Political Cartoon, entitled "Pistol Packin' Perry." Please check it out on Youtube, and share it amongst your peeps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI3OMbt19Fc
I'm a Christian and I'm praying for these poor, misinformed people at this convention. They obviously don't know what Christianity is. Perry's corruption will catch up with him. That kind of evil and hatred doesn't come from God, it comes from the devil and I TRULY believe that the devil is working through this man.
.. and "jeeebbus" drives me to drink! lol
Power corrupts and Perry is very corrupt. He's got it so bad he lies to himself and believes it. He's a Texas size fool. He's got as much chance at the Presidency as I do...and I'm not running for the position.
Too bad the liberal media didn't even pick up on these comments. They were reporting on MSNBC this morning that there weren't any questionable remarks. I happen to live in TX and Gov Good Hair has damaged this state in so many ways. A lot of it is already starting to come out and it will bring him down. He's got his head so far up in the clouds that personal insults can't penetrate his thick head or hard heart. He said recently on an interview when confronted with the reality that a lot of Texans didn't like him, (paraphrase) A "prophet" is often not accepted by his own people. He is a real danger, totally narcisistic and believes his every action, or inaction, is justified as God's will. He's never lost any election he's ever been in as a career politician. I'm hoping he will have to swallow some humble pie and realize he's not the God's gift to man that he thinks he is.
I feel your pain. I broke with my parent's religion years ago and went through a lot of hounding about my choice. I came out of the closet several years after that and you can imagine the grief I got then. I'm not an athiest but I believe everyone has an obligation to determine their own belief system. I sincerely hope your situation improves and someday your parents will open their minds to your truth. I actually found that, in the case of my parents, to open their minds to something different than their indoctrination makes them question their own foundation of belief. To do that makes them fearful and unreasonable. Best of luck to you.
Blah,blah,blah...all I wanna know is, when is Rick Perry gonna come out of the closet???
Your parents cut off your financial aid for college today and Thursday they will shut off your power for non payment! Getting married just to get financial aid for school? I don't know why that would be necessary or how it helps but sounds to me like you just need someone to help pay your bills because thats what good Americans do, quit working and demand that someone else pay their way! Sounds to me like your parents should have kicked you loose years ago! BTW why did you not get married when you had those children you want to teach not to believe what you believe? You may be right in your beliefs, but don't blame the hand that has fed you all these years for your failures!
I cannot believe that these statements were actually made at that rally! It's incredible that people really believe all this stuff. I am worried that if Perry does run for Pres. that there will be enough screwballs out there to vote for him and he could win. OMG!!
Why I know That There is a God and That He Loves Me A Personal Testimony. Allow me to share a story. Not too long ago doubt was creeping into my head about the Lord and then a miracle happened. It was 3 years ago and 50 members of my church were enroute to a bible camp in the Blueridge Mountains of Virginia. They were traveling in a chartered bus. As they sang blessed hymns to the Lord, Satan was up to his old tricks. You see, the bus driver was an atheist socialist and that day his coffee mug was filled with vodka. As the bus wound up through the switchbacks, the driver became progressively drunker. Then it happened. It was that day that changed this poor sinner's life forever. Entering a particularly tight switchback, the besotted driver finally lost control of the bus and it plummeted 1500 feet down into a ravine where it exploded into a fireball incinerating the flock. The only survivor that fateful day was a young boy who was thrown from the bus by his father seconds before it hit the bottom. This young boy suffered severe brain damage from hitting a rock head first and will have to wear a football helmet and drool cup for the remainder of his life. But his survival proved to me that miracles do happen because God does exist and loves me. The Lord caused that accident to bring me back to his flock. Hallelujah! Praise Jesus! Just open your eyes to his miracles and you will see him everywhere.
We seriously need to worry and counteract the the Christian Right. Maybe I was being naive, but I didn't think they would dare make these outrageos anti American statements.
Thankyou, I honestly feel bad for them and I want to help them. They've been deceived and its a sad fact they're willing to disown their only child for their religion.
"..Science flies you to the Moon, Religion flies you into Buildings.."
(sigh) Yet another reason I want to get the hell out of TX...
Power to you, Crystal.
Ummmm, isn't the church a man made organization?
That stinks. I hope things work out OK.
Whenever Christians talks about Judeo-Christian unity what they mean is getting Jews to become Christians.
Hi Crystal. Sorry to hear that about your parents wanting to blackmail you into their faith. They have been strongly influenced by some nasty christians to behave that way to their daughter. Religion makes people do wicked, inhuman things. Good luck and I hope things work out for you soon. Cheers, Mark.
America, you better get you act together, you are starting to look like you are run by mullahs.
All of these quotations are just so ridiculous. It really sounds like they're trying to do their best impression of Islam. Can't the two religions just get together and kill each other and get it over with already? Oh, wait..
My parents went to this rally. When they came back they seem different. They started this huge argument and when I broke the news I'm not a christian they decided to drop my fiance aid for college so now im stuck paying 550 a month in college debt and have to get married this weekend so I can get my financial aid back so I don't lose my home. I've lost my job and my electric is scheduled to be turned off this Thursday and what do they say? Fully rely on god. Religion is corrupting people. I find it ironic they all cheer about freedom of religion when its on THEIR end. I think I have every right to be myself, and to teach my children they don't have to believe what I do or what other people believe. Belief is a personal choice and this is getting out of hand. I'm a proud atheist and I will stand for what I believe. I believe in being a good person and helping others. I will not give into your fascist beliefs, I am not a fool, I will like MY life the master of MY destiny.
